Film and music video director

About

Hi, my name is Jonathan Desbiens. I’m from a lovely small town called Shawinigan-Sud, in Quebec (Canada). To properly introduce myself, I’d say that a part of me leaded by my extreme curiosity wants to explore the whole universe while my inner self is deeply missing this strange little industrial town. I think that most of my inspiration comes from that paradox.

I was born in 1986 and played with my Legos until I was 14. Then, I felt I had to become more serious, more “adult”, creatively speaking. So I picked up a camera and started editing with 2 VHS decks. That’s how I discovered all the power of images in motion, the power of artistic creation, of expressing myself and communicating personnal, abstract concepts to others in a playful way. In doing so, my plan to secretly stay young forever was working. I can proudly say that this plan is still working today. I think that my need for film-making, painting, editing, philosophizing etc. is my weapon to fight the cynical world we live in. It gives me the opportunity to create beautiful new worlds and dimensions that only exist in my mind. More importantly, working today as a film director gives me the opportuniy to meet new awesome people from around the world who share this common goal of creating art that may change someone else’s life. I firmly believe that films, music videos and even sometimes commercials can do that, directly or indirectly.

Interesting fact, when I was 19, I’ve been turned down by the Concordia University film school of Montréal, then I then decided to learn the craft on my own and study fine arts at the same time to approach cinema in a more personnal and unique way. I completed a degree in Fine Arts from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in 2010.
